Luke has grown from a seven pound baby in my arms, to a skinny toddler, to a still skinny little boy. His little five year old boy self is shy and silly, excitable and endearing, passionate and partial to tractors, trains, construction equipment, and his Daddy. He has a big piece of our hearts and we have treasured these last five years with him. Really, truly, where does time go?
Luke is a lover of books. He pages through books many times throughout the day and retells the stories aloud. His favorites at the moment are: The Magic Tree House series, Disney Cars, Disney Planes, Winnie the Pooh, The Lion King, Star Wars, and I Spy.
A combine or tractor ride make Luke giddy. He cannot get enough of riding through the fields and loves feeling like he is right in the action.
Luke and Lily are best friends. They play together so well at times and then, let's be real, they act like siblings. Luke loves talking Lily into playing one of his games and she is more than willing to follow along.
Although Thomas isn't as cool to Luke as it once was, he still loves trains. One of his favorite spots to go in town is Rails West. He also loves a visit to Lauritzen when the trains are out or the Durham Museum.
When Luke is at home, he spends most of his time either reading books or playing with trains, trucks, or tractors. Lately he has been harvesting all the 'corn' in the living room and dining room.
Luke loves do-a-dot pages. These are pages where he can use dot markers to dot specific things like animals or vehicles. And, as always, he loves a good puzzle.
Luke's favorite part of homeschool is math. He loves counting and numbers. His least favorite part is writing, but he has recently learned how to write his name and some numbers. Progress, people. He is a lefty, which is funny because Kevin, my dad, and Kevin's dad all write left-handed. It must be genetic?
As much as Luke loves staying home to play, he loves a good outing. His favorite places to visit are the Children's Museum, the book store, the library, Target, and Rails West. He also doesn't mind the zoo or a park.
Luke's repertoire of food he eats has grown. His favorites include dinosaur chicken nuggets, raspberries (best picked fresh), Star Wars macaroni and cheese, crepes with Nutella, applesauce, steak, smoothies, bread, and waffles with honey. He is still a carb lover, like his momma.
Luke told us he is going to stop sucking his fingers when he turns five. As his birthday has inched closer, he is slowly changing his tune. (Imagine that) We are hopeful this habit will subside before he graduates high school. #fingerscrossed
The last five years have been the best of my life and I mean that wholeheartedly. Luke has brought us such joy and taught us how to love, have patience, and be unselfish. He has brought us closer to God and closer to each other. He is our sweet little boy and always will be.
As the years slowly slide by, I can't help but think I will always see him as his two year old self, his three year old self, his five year old self. I am embedding in my brain the way he says 'Christmas'...'Kissmas' and the way he looks at me when he is half asleep and the way he holds my face when he asks me to say 'chubby bunny'. I am memorizing his giggle when something really tickles him and his round cheeked face as I watch him sleep. Kevin is trying to permanently remember the way Luke says, "Daddy, you're a good daddy. I love you." I pray I can remember the way he is today thirty years from now because these days are simply magical.
P.S. Because I wanted to take a walk down memory lane and cry my momma heart out, here are some treasured pictures from the last five years with our Luke.
Happy Birthday, sweet boy of mine!
